International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) 2020 winners announced!

This year’s International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) winners were announced online, as the Winter Music Conference in Miami had been canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

For the second year in a row, the IDMA committee worked on the nominations together with music-tech company Viberate to pick the nominees, based on their social media and streaming metrics, thus ensuring objectivity in the artist selection.

Vasja Veber, Viberate‘s co-founder, explains:

“Music awards are often criticized for being biased. Sometimes you can play the system and pay for votes. The IDMA nominee selection does not work like that. We use data from big networks (streaming services, social networks, ticket vendors etc.) to see who really deserves a nomination, and in my opinion, these numbers reflect the actual popularity of an artist in the most unbiased way possible.

Working on their fan interaction should be every artist’s main promotional focus, and not just the winners, but also the nominees master this art.”

With the Covid-19 pandemic bringing live music events to a standstill, artists have to turn to the internet to keep in touch with their fans. Boosting engagement, gaining traction, and other online activities are now more important than ever, and they also result in higher popularity ratings on Viberate. “Because of this, it will be very interesting to see who gets picked next year,” Veber adds.

“The World Stands Still” is an emotionally video reflecting the current worldwide pandemic

Bernd Breiter

Created by WORLD CLUB DOME visionary Bernd Breiter, “The World Stands Still” is an emotionally honest video message reflecting the current worldwide pandemic.

With 500,000 views in less than 48 hours, and emotional video has become a massive social media hit throughout Germany. Created by WORLD CLUB DOME visionary Bernd Breiter, “TheWorld Stands Still” is an emotionally honest video message reflecting the current worldwide pandemic. Stars of the electronic music world, such as superstar DJ Steve Aoki, were touched, offering their support to the message: “That’s why we decided to create an English version of the clip. International acts and DJs with whom we are friends asked about it, hoping to share the message with their fans.”

Bernd Breiter is a once in a lifetime visionary – he created the “largest club in the world”, built the first club in zero gravity, transformed cruise ships into floating clubs, turned planes into dance floors and sent the first DJ into space. His incredible and ambitious vision of seamlessly interweaving science with entertainment has inspired young people nationwide to once again look to stars.

World Club Dome Snow Edition

Along with the European Space Agency (ESA), Bernd has also inspired countless media channels around the world. Most recently at an event in Hollywood, true legends of the silver screen such as Morgan Freeman, John Travolta, and Robert De Niro welcomed an audience with the Frankfurt-based entrepreneur.

But as one day turned to another, the world was no longer the same. Overnight, life as we knew it had turned upside down. The entire world shuddered to a halt. The virus that had paralyzed the planet also had a huge impact on Bernd Breiter‘s future vision of staging major events.

20 years ago, he identified the ‘big city weekend feeling’ and defined it as “BigCityBeats” – big city heartbeats beating faster and louder the closer the weekend gets. Meeting friends, eating out together and then partying in the cities best clubs, or at the world’s biggest festivals, all of this was suddenly impossible.

World Club Dome Zero Gravity

The family man, who, like many others, has been shocked by the massive spread of the pandemic, also had a vision in this situation too. For years he has been able to convey ideas emotionally and succinctly through various visuals and productions. And this is the exact medium that BigCityBeats wished to use to make it clear to the large electronic music community, and to everyone around the world, the importance of #StayHome.

The BigCityBeats team organizes events that welcome 400,000 visitors annually, and together they’re appealing to everyone at home. Reminding them that it’s absolutely essential to avoid contact with others.

“This is the only way we can curb the spread of the virus because only then will we all be able to meet friends again, celebrate together and travel to the world’s largest festivals,” said the 49-year-old.

“Freedom has not been granted by God, instead, it has been hard-earned over many generations. We are aware of this now more than ever. And while public life has been brought to an abrupt standstill with 99 percent of the population forced indoors, there are others fearlessly turning their lives upside down to save lives: doctors, nurses, supermarket employees, and bakers,” explains the Frankfurt resident.

The message of the video continues by thanking the heroic people risking their lives on a daily basis. And with motivation and perseverance, he is convinced that “in the future, we will treasure life much more intensely and find new appreciation in the values, that for years have seemed so natural to us.”

For four nights the visionary mind behind BigCityBeats worked on the two-minute clip. The powerful message behind “The world stands still” continues to grow in strength and resonance.

Upon its first two days of release the German edition went viral being viewed across Facebook, Instagram and YouTube more than 500,000 times “I never expected the video to spread so quickly,” says Bernd Breiter.

ADDAC System announces 106 T-NOISEWORKS Eurorack Module

T-NOISEWORKS Eurorack Module

ADDAC System announces the last synthesizer module in its T-Networks series, 106 T-NOISEWORKS. The new Eurorack module, which will be available in mid-April for a price of €160, features a straightforward 4-voice module with frequency and decay controls for each voice.

In addition to these voices, ADDAC System has included an additional noise source in the design and created two different circuits that explore the timbre of a T-Network when used to filter noise.

With two different circuits in this module, voices (1) to (3) have a pre-VCA T-Network filter, while on voice (4) the T-Networks filter is applied post-VCA. Further, at each voice input stage, there is a switch that controls which type of input to use.

Since this signal is used to control an internal VCA, the type of defined setting is important:
Trigger: Any incoming CV will be converted into a 1ms trigger as soon as it crosses its fixed threshold.
Mute: This disconnects the incoming signal, effectively muting the voice.
Envelopes: This can be used with CV sources as well as gate sources, and simply follows the input signal.

This incoming signal will then be processed by a slew circuit which adds a decay factor — allowing the user to set the “Tail” of each voice. The Trigger mode is mostly dedicated for percussive sounds, while the Envelope mode is open to any external envelope control and able to control noise swooshes, swirls, crackles and pops simply out of T-Networks filtered noise. Audio inputs are also welcomed to be used as a Trigger/Envelope input. In fact, the sonic results of using this method can be very surprising!

ADDAC System 106 T-NOISEWORKS Eurorack Module
Timbre selector

The first (3) voices feature a Timbre selector switch. In Snare mode all frequencies coming from the T-Networks filter pass-thru to the output. In Hat mode, it adds a high pass circuit that removes the mid/bottom frequencies (characteristic of the snare strike) creating a higher spectrum output that is sonically closer to a Hat timbre. All of these (3) voices are also differently tuned from each other to offer more sonic options. Voice (4) meantime is closer to a typical T-Networks circuit, but this time a peculiar one where the noise is gated by the VCA and then sent through the T-Networks filter.

Features: (4) Voices, each with:
-Frequency control, decay control, timbre type (voices 1 to 3)
-Frequency range switch, Low/Mod/High (Voice 4) Input
-Audio Output
-Also and overall Summing Mix output with Volume control and (2) different output types (Normal/Dirt)
-Tech Specs: 4HP 4cm deep 40mA +12V 40mA -12V
-The 106 T NOISEWORKS module will also be available as a full DIY kit.

Paul van Dyk & Kinetica make ‘First Contact’!

Paul Van Dyk

Today electronic music lovers receive another advance transmission from ‘Guiding Light’ – the hotly anticipated tenth artist album from Paul van Dyk. The genre pioneer has connected with Kinetica (Dee Henry) for ‘First Contact’ – their fittingly titled debut.

Since Kinetica’s 2015 sign-in (remixing Tiesto & Benno de Goeiji’s ‘Endless Wave’), he’s struck one studio homerun after another. A product of Ireland’s ever-vibrant trance scene, his 2019 ‘Whispers’ demo caught Paul’s attention, which ultimately saw it inked to VANDIT’s Next Generation imprint.

Following Paul van Dyk’s Feb-released ‘Duality’, ‘First Contact’ moves ‘Guiding Light’s tonal needle another step closer to midnight. A heat-seeking trance missile, it’s one that’s been calibrated for maximum spiritual elevation, with the deepest of feelgood impacts.

Paul van Dyk & Kinetika First Contact

Outside of ‘Guiding Light’, the middle of March saw Paul van Dyk step back into the virtual clubbing space, offering a timely response to clubland’s new reality. Together with fellow Berliner Chris Bekker, he performed the first in a projected series of PC Music Nights. Streamed live through Facebook from the German capital’s (poignantly crowd-less) Anomalie Art Garden venue, the 5hr show reached over 1.2 million.

With a musical tone kept purposefully positive, Paul and Chris peppered its tracklist with the inspiring likes of ‘Music Rescues Me’ and ‘Lights’, as well as giving a first-time airing of ‘Guiding Light’s title track. Says Paul, “the idea, was to unite people from all over the world, bring them together virtually, find strength in numbers and escape reality through music”.

Mathame released their long-anticipated single ‘Never Give Up’

Mathame

Italian brothers Mathame release their anticipated new single ‘Never Give Up’. With the track awarded the BBC Radio 1 ‘Essential New Tune’ accolade by Pete Tong, ‘Never Give Up’ continues to demonstrate the duo’s ascension and validate their talent within the global dance music community.

Over recent years, electronic duo Mathame have established themselves as one of underground music’s most promising rising acts. Released via ‘B1 Recordings‘ / ‘Ministry Of Sound‘, ‘Never Give Up‘ is Mathame‘s new single which follows an ever-growing stream of support, already fostered from industry leaders including BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong who awarded their earlier release on Tale Of Us‘ ‘Afterlife‘, ‘For Every Forever‘ their first ‘Essential New Tune‘.

Here’s what Mathame had to say about the track:

“Musically, ‘Never Give Up’ has many influences, from techno to cinematic soundtracks and sound design. We try to synthesise all our influences into one track that can be like a manifesto of our sound, dynamic, wider, handcrafted, dreaming, with a simple and strong message. A message to the earth, like a flag that calls everyone to not ever give up.

The track arrives at the time of a global crisis where it feels like everything is out of our hands and we have lost control. Now more than ever, the planet earth and humanity need this message, every day and every night.”

Mathame Never Give Up

Forming in 2013, brothers Amedeo and Matteo Giovanelli have progressively become an integral part of the underground electronic scene, first releasing on Vaal‘s ‘Bastaard‘ label in 2015. Followed up with a further EP on Tiefschwarz‘s revered ‘Souvenir‘ in 2017, their activity arguably culminated at its peak in a release for Tale Of Us‘ ‘Afterlife‘ label in 2018, featuring tracks ‘Nothing Around Us‘ and ‘Fade Into You‘.

2019 proved to be a breakthrough year for the duo, with an international touring schedule spanning Stockholm, Abu Dhabi, Milan, Istanbul and more, highlighted by a performance for French video platform Cercle, filmed at the summit of Mexico City’s Reforma 180 Heliport. With the Cercle stream currently amassing over 1.5 million views, Mathame have also worked with fellow Italian duo and close friends, Tale Of Us. The last two years have seen Mathame become residents for their ‘Afterlife‘ event series, performing at showcases from Mexico to Ibiza.

Bridging the gap between the underground and mainstream, Mathame have continued to showcase their prowess as producers, remixing for the Grammy-nominated live electronic act RÜFÜS DU SOL, along with providing an anthemic rework of MEDUZA‘s ‘Lose Control‘.

Mathame will continue their unstoppable momentum across the new decade, starting with the new release of the standout track from their sets, ‘Never Give Up‘.
