Reports are surfacing that 17 people are arrested and nearly $810 million dollars worth of drugs have been seized including nearly 2 tonnes of ecstasy, 136 kg of cocaine and 15 kg of crystal meth.
Apparently the shipment was on it’s way to Australia but was obtained by members of a sting team in the Netherlands back in July. Another shocking part about the story is that it involved the names of some high profile families in Sydney. These names included two of the Ibrahim brothers, Mustapha Dib and Rock Ahmad. Other arrests were made in Dubai and also two people in Hague.
John Ibrahim’s Dover Heights estate was one of the main places targeted during the police raids. 28 other properties were also raided in Vaucluse, Bellevue Hill, Bankstown, Punchbowl and Arncliffe. Ibrahim, who is a nightlife figure in Sydney, has owned or controlled more than 40 licensed venues between the years of 1988 and 2014.
It’s said that the Australian Federal Police have been investigating two of the involved crime syndicates since 2016. Here’s the crazy part, apparently 1.8 ton of MDMA was seized, along with 136kg of Cocaine and 15kg of Crystal Meth was all within this insane shipment of narcotics.
AFP assistant commissioner Neil Gaughan recently claimed that the two involved groups had a long history of importing illicit substances into the country. He had this to say about it:
“This is a huge blow to their ongoing criminality,” he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday. “We know we need to make a dent in organized crime and the best way to do that is to take the top of tree and we will bring the tree down.”
“There is a perception in criminal circles in this country that people are untouchable once they go offshore,” Gaughan said. “Our international partners, one day, will come knocking on your door. This is a very clear message that places like Dubai and the UAE more broadly are working with law enforcement to bring these people to justice.”
