Upon a request from the Bureau of Land Management, law enforcement officers will reportedly be conducting drug tests on motor vehicle operators coming in and out of the desert playa at Burning Man.
They will be testing for controlled substances, including cannabis, despite the state having just recently legalized recreational cannabis use. Apparently, even such a ridiculously tiny amount as 10 nanograms per mililiter of pee will get a driver to test positive for cannabis use.
To give readers an idea of how much (or how little) that amount is, the smallest edibles in California contain about 2 milligrams of THC. If someone were to get behind a wheel at Burning Man with even just one percent of that amount still in their body, they would get a DUI.
Probable cause will be required for the officers to initiate the testing of any particular driver, but such “probable cause” could be anything from driving erratically or having anything that could be considered drug paraphernalia.
Hide all your paraphernalia and drive safely and sanely, burners.
